Draft of suggested Leaflet to be handed to Enemy aliens when they are interned.

FROM THE PRIME MINISTER

In this moment of crisis, when the people of this Island and men and women throughout the Empire are resolved to win final victory over the enemy,

THE SECURITY OF THE STATE IS THE SUPREME LAW.

Your internment and the internment of the enemy Aliens at present in the United Kingdom

is therefore

A NECESSITY OF WAR.

His Majesty's Government are aware that this stern necessity may involve undeserved and unavoidable hardships for many. They are also aware that many Aliens thus interned are REFUGEES FROM NAZI OPPRESSION; men and women who ardently desire Britain's victory and the defeat of Hitler.

Unfortunately, there is every reason to fear that among the internees are also a certain number of dangerous agents of the enemy and of persons whose friendly feelings towards this country and moral integrity must he doubted. If such enemies of this country — who have not scrupled to abuse our hospitality and pose as friendly refugees - were allowed freedom of movement, they could, would, cause serious damage and thus hinder the war effort of this country.

That is the reason why YOU are interned. It is an unfortunate, but unavoidable act taken in the interest of National Defence.

His Majesty's Government wish to assure all honest friends of Great Britain now in Internment Camps:

1) that the just grievances of the Internees will be heard and dealt with -

2) that many of those who can actively assist this country in the successful prosecution of the war will, in due course, be released -

3) that living conditions in all Internment Camps will be improved.

HIS MAJESTY'S GOVERNMENT

therefore, expect from all Internees that they should bring this sacrifice of a temporary loss of freedom for the sake of

OUR FINAL VICTORY OVER THE ENEMY.

(Signed) WINSTON CHURCHILL.
