The Empire Service covers transmissions to Australia, New Zealand, Oceania, Far East, India, Burma, Malaya, Africa, South America, West Indies and North America; an increase of 98 hours of live programmes and a decrease of 87 hours of recorded programmes.

The European Service covers news bulletins in Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Magyar, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbo-Croat, Spanish and Swedish, and programmes in French, Italian, Czech, German, Spanish and Polish; an increase of 83 hours of live programmes and a decrease of 26 hours of recorded programmes.

The Latin-American Service covers transmissions in Brazilian and Spanish to Latin-America; an increase of 13 hours of live programmes.

The Near Eastern Service covers transmissions in Arabic, Greek, Turkish and Persian, an increase of 5 hours of live programmes.

These increases in live programme material explain the necessity for increased staff and programme allowances.
