Colonel Treadwell

Admiral Carpendale

Mr. Lyne

1. REPORTS FROM SERVICE ADVISERS .

2. ALLIED MILITARY GOVERNMENT ORGANISATION.

[N/448]

Colonel Treadwell, reverting to a previous discussion at the Board, reported that the War Office proposed to offer press facilities for a visit to the training centre for this and similar organisations; but that if, as had been stressed by the Duty Room Conference, some general statement was required, this would have to be extracted from Algiers Headquarters. Mr. Grubb felt that the proposed facility was unlikely to meet the Ministry's needs, and further that stories deriving from it would inevitably dwell on the arrangements for future organisations in liberated as well as enemy territories, a subject on which discussion would be unhelpful at the present time. The Chairman summed up the Board's view that the material required should describe the function and working of the organisation in Sicily, making clear its limitations of scope; and he invited Colonel Treadwell to arrange for a telegram to be sent to Algiers representing the Ministry's view.

3. YUGOSLAV RESISTANCE.

[X/248]

Mr. Ryan enquired what authority lay behind the statements from Cairo, which obviously had a common source, that the forces of General Mihailovic were now organised in harmony with the partisans. The Chairman directed that a telegram of enquiry should be sent to the Middle East Bureau; and Mr. Ryan was invited to arrange this with the Director of the Middle East Division.
