1. REPORTS FROM SERVICE ADVISERS.

2. BASIC ENGLISH

[X/284]

The Chairman informed the Board that Mr. L.S. Amery had called a meeting of representatives of interested Departments to discuss responsibility for a grant to the Orthological Institute, for an extension of their work on Basic English. This grant had been approved by the War Cabinet. The Chairman suggested that this Ministry could not refuse to act as a channel for a grant; but it was not desirable to accept responsibility for supervising the activities of the Institute. Mr. Gates pointed out that if the grant represented a long term policy it was hardly suitable for a temporary Ministry to carry it. Mr. Bamford was asked to attend the meeting on behalf of the Ministry.
