1. REPORTS FROM SERVICE ADVISERS .

2. EMBARGOES .

[N.]

Mr. Macgregor reported that the B.B.C. received last night time embargoes on several subjects, including the price of stoneware; the cost of living; and the resignation of Mrs. Knox. He said that, although there may be an adequate reason for imposing embargoes in these particular cases, there were many instances in which the embargo seemed to be unjustifiable. Mr. Francis Williams pointed out that these three embargoes were not security measures and did not originate in this Ministry. The Chairman suggested that it would be helpful if the News Division scrutinised all departmental embargoes, and where they appeared to be purposeless, intervened with the department concerned. Mr. Francis Williams agreed to see that instructions to this effect were given to the News Division.
