1. REPORTS FROM SERVICE ADVISERS.

2. ANGLO-SOVIET PUBLIC RELATIONS

[HP/874/20.]

The Chairman enquired whether any active steps were being taken towards the appointment of a secretary to this body. It was explained that the matter lay at present between the Soviet Relations Branch and Establishments, Home Division having a subsidiary interest. The Chairman directed that Mr. Smollett and Mr. Parker report to him on the present position and prospective action.

3. PAPER ECONOMY AND THE “RADIO TIMES.

[GP/185/170.]

The D.D.G. reported that the Ministry's view had been asked by the Ministry of Production on a suggestion that economies should be effected in the make-up of the “Radio Times”. He explained that this suggestion originated with the Paper Economy Committee of the Ministry of Production, a body which considered and, as advisable, acted upon criticisms or proposals made by members of the public. The B.B.C., in rebuttal, had pointed out that the “Radio Times” lived within its ration and that any reduction in size would be made at the expense of its usefulness. The Board endorsed the Chairman's view that importance must be attached to the “Radio Times” being both legible and acceptable in format, and invited the D.D.G., if he thought necessary, to take advice from Publications Division on the technical question of legibility in the proposed revision of lay-out.
