The Brighton by-election

This has aroused widespread interest. Most comment is centred on the Prime Minister's intervention; the majority of those expressing views regret his action (Nine Regions).

Some feel he used “unnecessarily strong” language; others think he should be above party politics altogether, representing the country as a whole.

On the other hand, smaller numbers of people approve both his “forthright” words and his attack on “complacency”.

People interpret the result of the election as indicating suspicion of the Government's postwar intentions, and as a warning that party “dictation” is resented.
