* Returns were made by 1,361 out of a total of 1,695 L.A.'s. Yield of salvage is given per 1,000 of population of Authorities making returns.

The yield of paper in Scotland is been to be appreciably higher than in England and Wales. This is probably due partly to the fact that fewer small Authorities are represented in the Scottish figures, but even when allowance is made for this, there is a quite considerable difference is the yield for Scotland.

The yield of kitchen waste is also somewhat greater in Scotland. It is noticeably low for rural districts of England and Wales, 6.7 cwts per 1,000 of population.

The percentage increases for November and December 1941 over the average for November 1939 to August 1941 vary considerably as between the different types of salvage. Much the largest increase is in kitchen waste, but the increase in the yield of paper is also considerable.

It is proposed to give details of salvage returns from Local Authorities each month, and when more figures are available it is hoped to relate the receipts of salvage to publicity about it.
