A History of the Ministry of Information, 1939-46
The 975 homes visited contained 5733 rooms of ten different types - an average of 5.9 rooms per household. Table 1 shows the total number of rooms of each type and the number of these that were carpeted.
It will be seen that 42.5% of parlours and only 2.3% of working kitchens are carpeted.
The information in table 1 analysed by size of room is presented as tables 10, 11, 12 and 13.
The 975 households were analysed by the number of carpeted rooms in each household. Those results are presented as table 2.
No. of carpeted Rooms in the household | Frequency | % |
0 | 504 | 52 |
1 | 287 | 29 |
2 | 107 | 11 |
3 | 48 | 5 |
4 | 21 | 2 |
5 | 8 | 1 |
6 or more | 0 | 0 |
Total | 975 | 100 |
It will be seen that approximately half the households have no carpeted rooms. The average number of carpeted rooms per household is 0.79.
Tables 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 show what types of rooms are carpeted in the home of housewives with various numbers of carpeted rooms. These housewives, together with the 504 who have no carpeted rooms, number 975. Analyses of those tables by economic group, by age of dwelling and by urban/rural yield results that show no elusive differences in view of the comparatively small number involved. These 5 analyses are therefore not presented, in the report.
It will be seen that in households with only 1 carpeted room the most popular type of room to be carpeted is a living-room. 76% of these household indicate this choice.
Of households with only 2 carpeted room, the most popular choice (55%) is 1 living-room and 1 bed or bed-sitting room.
Of households with only 3 carpeted rooms, the most popular choice (62%) is 1 living-room and 2 bed or bed-sitting rooms.
Of households with only 4 carpeted rooms, the most popular choice (14 out of 21) is 2 living-rooms and 2 bed or bed-sitting rooms.
Of households with only 5 carpeted rooms, the most popular choice (5 out of 8) is 2 living-rooms and 3 bed or bed-sitting rooms.
For the 287 households with only 1 carpeted room and the 107 households with only 2 carpeted rooms it is possible to classify in greater detail the types of rooms that are carpeted.
Table 8 shows the number, percentage of households whose 1 carpeted is of any of 6 types. It should be noted that in this table ‘other room’ means a room of a type different from the remaining 2 types in those tables.
It will be seen that the most popular type of room to have carpeted is a parlour (32%), followed by a living or sitting-room other than a parlour (26%).
Table 9 shows with respect to the same 6-fold classification of types of room the choice of rooms to be carpeted made by the 107 housewives with only 2 carpeted rooms. The caution as to the meaning of ‘other room’ applies as in the case of table 8.
It will be seen that the most popular choice of 2 rooms to have carpeted is a parlour and a bed or bed-sitting-room. 30 housewives (28%) had this arrangement,
14 housewives (13%) had 2 bed or bed-sitting rooms carpeted, and 2 housewives (2%) had 2 living-rooms carpeted.
Table 10, 11, 12 and 13 show the approximate floor areas (excluding bay windows and recesses) of various types of rooms, both for all rooms in the sample and for carpeted and uncarpeted rooms. It will be seen that in general there is little difference between the average area of the carpeted and uncarpeted rooms. Living/sitting rooms 1,2 and 3 bed/bed-sitting rooms 1, 2, 3 and 4 indicate more than 1 such rooms in 1 home. The numbers attached to the rooms do not indicate any particular order of precedence in size or importance or in any other respect.
