A History of the Ministry of Information, 1939-46
Note A. The definition (see Instruction 3) of a structurally separate dwelling must be emphasized. Thus, a room, or rooms, will he an S.S.D. where it is separated from the rest of the building by partitioning and an individual front door with a key, the provision of extra doors within for access to the several rooms, etc.
Consequently, a room, or group of rooms, will NOT constitute an S.S.D.:
(i) where the room, or rooms, are not separated from the rest of the building by partitioning and an individual front door with a key, the provision of extra doors within for access to the several rooms, etc.
(ii) even though the whole of a floor in a house is occupied exclusively unless it is separated from the rest of the building in the manner described above.
(iii) where the room, or rooms, even though containing own stove, sink, W.C. etc., is not separated from the rest of the building in the manner described above.
A flat may be self-contained (and will thus be an S.S.D.) if it is separated off as described above, even though a bathroom and/or W.C. is shared.
(a) If an address on the quota, given as “1st floor”, “2nd floor”, etc., turns out to be an S.S.D. on that floor, only the households on that floor should be interviewed;
(b) An address on the quota, given as “1st floor”, “2nd floor”, etc., may turn out not to be an S.S.D. but only one floor in a house which is itself the S.S.D. In this case, all households on all floors at that address should be interviewed;
(c) An address given on the quota as “55, Smith Street” or “16, Jones Street” may turn out to be composed of several S.S.D's. Here the interviewer should take the ground floor at the first such address, the first floor at the next, then the second floor, and then back to the ground floor, and so on. She should also note in such a case the S.S.D's in all at that address. But she should interview, of course, only on the one floor .
(d) At an address given as “55, Archer Street”, etc., which turns out to contain only one S.S.D. all individuals of 18 or over should be interviewed there.
This must be asked of all informants, and not restricted, as stated, to married women.
