THE SAMPLE

All interviewing was in towns and consequently those areas where agricultural labour forms a large proportion of the population are represented by their urban industry only. The weighting down of these areas ensured that this did not affect the proportions of these industries in the whole sample although it must be remembered that in those regions only urban opinion has been sampled. (S.W., S. and E. Anglia especially).

It will be noticed from the detailed figures that the proportion of interviews made in places of work in a central or inner town position is higher in some regions than others. Places of work were selected by investigators in consultation with local Ministry of Labour officials and such regional differences represent differences in the layout of industry.

Centre is the area of the town which contains the main shopping and business centres.

Inner is the area outside the centre extending to about half the distance from the centre to the limits of the town.

Outer is the area outside the Inner area.

Nationally, these differences are as follows:-

Industrial Group by Where Situated

Centre Inner Outer Unclassified
% % % %
Heavy manufacturing 13.7 41.0 44.6 .7
Light manufacturing (1) 11.8 43.7 43.4 1.1
Light manufacturing (2) 20.3 53.0 25.8 .9
Mining - 22.7 77.3 -
Building 17.6 46.1 35.8 .5
Transport and Public services 43.6 39.0 17.0 .4
Distributive 65.4 20.2 13.3 1.1
Clerical 54.7 29.8 15.3 .2

(1) Engineering and all munitions

(2) All other factory workers.

Similarly the age proportions in the different regions and the proportions married or single vary because of the labour composition of the occupations in the towns visited.
