Nearly a quarter say that it would cause them hardship if they could not buy on credit.

To check up on the question of whether the cessation of credit amenities would cause hardship, informants were asked a second question on the same subject at a later stage of the interview.

The number of those who think they could not buy certain articles is nearly the same as those who thought it would cause them hardship. Six hundred and ninety-seven answered this question in the affirmative, and seven hundred and twenty-seven did so in answer to the first question.

Group differences exist. As these are the same for both hardship questions, we give in the following table, only the breakdowns for the question “If it should become impossible to buy on a credit system would this cause any hardship?
