WARTIME SOCIAL SURVEY New Series 30 .

BRUSHES .

An inquiry made for the Board of Trade.

2858 interviews were made with non-working housewives between December 30th, 1942 and January 12th, 1943.

Housewives were asked whether they had tried to buy any of 17 types of brushes during the preceding 4 weeks: how many shops they had visited: whether they had actually bought any brushes; if so, what the prices had been and whether there had been any difficulty in obtaining them; those who had not been able to buy were asked the reasons for this. All housewives were asked what stocks of each type of brush they had.

* Groups A & B include people of the upper and middle social classes; groups C & D those in the lower middle and working classes.

It can be seen from this table that an appreciably higher proportion of housewives in the C & D group than in the A & B had tried to buy brushes. (Compare with class analysis of stocks.)

Analyses of answers to questions which are dependent on a positive answer to Q. 1. are only given when the number of people answering Q. 1. is over 100, that is, for eight types of brushes.

NUMBER OF SHOPS VISITED .

In Q. 3. those who had tried to buy brushes were asked how many shops they had visited for the purpose.

Of those who had tried to buy any of the nine types of brushes for which the numbers are too small to give reliable separate analyses an average of 39%, 12%, 44% visited one, two, and three or more shops respectively, and approximately 5% could not say how many they had visited.

Owing to the small numbers it is not possible to give a separate table showing the number of shops visited by those who had tried to buy brushes, but had not succeeded.

BRUSHES ACTUALLY BOUGHT .

Q. 4. asked if a brush had actually been bought.

DIFFICULTIES MET IN BUYING BRUSHES

Numbers who had bought brushes were below 100, and therefore no analyses of Questions 5, 6 and 7 are given, except in the case of scrubbing-brushes, nailbrushes and adults’ tooth-brushes, for which the results are as follows:-

Q. 5. If a brush was bought, was there any difficulty in getting it?

Of those who had bought any of the other 14 types of brushes, an average of 35% had had difficulty, 62% had not had difficulty, and 3% did not answer the question.

In no case did the number who said they had experienced difficulty getting any particular type of brush exceed 76, so that detailed analysis of the following question, which asked what the difficulties had been, is not practicable. However, if difficulties met in buying all the 17 types of brushes are grouped together the following averages can be obtained:-

PRICES PAID.

Those who had bought brushes were asked the prices they had paid for them. Reliable results can again be given only for scrubbing brushes, nail-brushes, and adults’ tooth brushes.

UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPTS TO BUY BRUSHES.

People who replied to Q. 4. that they had not bought a brush, were asked the reason for this. The numbers of negative replies to Q. 4. justify individual analysis in the case of 5 types of brushes: soft brooms, scrubbing brushes, stove brushes, saucepan brushes and nail-brushes.

Reasons for not buying given by those who bought any of the remaining 12 types of brushes were distributed in roughly the following proportions:- an average of 62% said the brushes were unobtainable, 23% complained that the prices were too high, 10% said the brushes had been of the wrong type, and 5% said they had been of poor quality.

REASONS FOR NOT TRYING TO BUY BRUSHES.

Those who replied to Q.1. that they had not tried to buy any brushes in the last 4 weeks were asked why they had not tried. Not more than 3% in any case said they had not tried to buy brushes because they had heard of the shortage, or had heard or seen that prices were high. The majority had not tried because they did not need any brushes; though a small proportion - ranging from 1% for infants’ hair brushes to 13% for scrubbing brushes - with an average of 5%, said they needed certain kinds of brushes, but had not yet tried to buy them.

STOCKS OF BRUSHES HELD .

In Q. 9 all housewives were asked how many of each kind of brush they possessed.

Stocks held by those who had and had not tried to buy brushes during the last 4 weeks are compared below for the 8 types of brushes which sufficient numbers of housewives had tried to buy.

- 5 -

From this it can be seen that, except in the case of saucepan brushes and adults’ tooth brushes, the proportions holding no stocks are appreciably higher amongst those who have tried to buy than amongst those who have not tried.

This table shows that where no stocks of these eight types of brushes were held the greatest number of attempts were made to buy scrubbing brushes, soft brooms and nail brushes; the numbers who had no stocks of hard brooms, soft banister brushes, stove and saucepan brushes and had tried to buy these brushes are relatively lower. The position as regards adults’ tooth brushes is interesting since it can be seen that those with the largest stocks had made considerably more efforts to buy tooth-brushes than those with only one toothbrush, and of the 232 families with no adults’ tooth-brushes none had made any attempt to buy one.
