Number of Families per House
This is some material which was collected for the Board of Trade by the Wartime Social Survey in the course of other inquiries
Interviewing: 1st to 13th March, 1943
A sample of 2,485 housewives were interviewed.
85.9% of the sample lived in houses and 14.1% in flats.
The number of families per house and per flat were as follows:-
The breakdown by region shows results for houses only. The proportion of households in flats in the different regions is shown below.
London is the only region showing any considerable difference from the previous results. The different boroughs included would account for this.
Breakdown by income group shows that in Class A 96.3 + or - 3-6% of families had a house to themselves. Otherwise there are no significant differences.
