Group differences in average consumption and expenditure

If the average quantities consumed per head per week and the average expenditure were analysed separately by different classification groups - Table 6 - the same trends in the consumption of the different groups can be observed as described on page 4.

Families with smaller wage rates, older people, housewives going out to work, and families growing vegetables consume less than those with higher wage rates, younger housewives, women staying at home, and families growing their own vegetables.

This general trend can be observed for most vegetables with very few exceptions, viz, more turnips are consumed in families with small incomes (4. 2 oz. per head per week) than by families with larger incomes (2. 9 oz, ). Tables 6-9, Appendix 5 show these facts in greater detail.
