SECTION 4. THE EXTENT TO WHICH NATIONAL WHEATMEAL BREAD IS AVALIABLE AT THE REGULAR BAKER.
Housewives who were able to identify national Wheatmeal were asked whether they were able to get the Bread at their regular baker. Some 1895 30% could either never get the bread or had not known if it was on sale, whilst over 58% could always get it.

It is interesting to compare the proportion which can always get N.W.B. with the proportions (on the same base those knowing about N.W.B.) of (a) those buying occasionally or regularly and (b) those never buying.

It will be seen that these areas which have the highest proportions never buy in have the lowest proportions always able to get N.W.B. (N. and N. East; Midland,
but not N.W.
) Conversely London & S.E. and Scotland have lowest proportion of never buying and highest proportion of always able to get N.W.B. The S.W. and Eastern areas have low proportions never buying and low proportions always able to get N.W.B.
The fairly high proportion never buying in the Midland area connects with a higher proportion never able to get N.W.B. in that area, but S. Wales has a fairly low proportion never buying with the lowest proportion always able to get N.W.B.
It will be seen therefore that circumstances are very mixed. In some areas low buying proportions may be explained by difficulties of getting the bread, but there are areas(S.W., Eastern and S. Wales) where good buying proportions are achieved despite supply difficulties.
B. Social Differences.
There were no notable differences in the proportions of the social groups able to get N.W.B. always, sometimes, or never, though a somewhat higher proportion of B. Group did not know whether they could get the bread.
It was shown in the previous Section that there were marked differences in the proportions never buying the bread, and since this is not to be explained by supply difficulties, differences in habit or ability to experience may perhaps be suggested as a cause.
